Milwaukee: Construction and Transitions

The city of Milwaukee is undergoing change at an astounding pace.  From the reconstruction of the
Marquette Interchange to the seemingly spontaneous sprouting of new condominium buildings and
the renovation of yesteryear's factories and tanneries, there is a building boom going on, the likes of
which we may not see for many years once it's through.  Six Milwaukee photographers have
contributed their vision and response to the metamorphosis of the city around them.

"I was attempting to find some beauty and
humor in the rust, decay and tangled mess."
Urban expansion and rural development
are two very important issues to me.  The
overwhelming need for residential
housing and everything that spawns from
urban expansion is constantly altering the
landscape, not just in Milwaukee but also
across the world.  As more and more
people move into downtown areas,
apartments fill, cost of living goes up,
traffic increases, highways back up, more
lanes are needed, four and a half year
long projects and renovations litter the
skyline with cranes, bare concrete, and
steel; while at the same time acres of land
lay destitute, rubble scattered over the
barren soil, skyscrapers, shopping malls,
supermarkets, and restaurants are
popping up all over the place.

In appreciation

The Wyland Whale Wall is no more. This wonderful piece of art had
to be destroyed because the building (situated over the expressway)
was crumbling and the interchange is being rebuilt.

Alas, the world continues to become smaller
as our horizons broaden.

Dreams will be built and lost here, fortunes
created and enjoyed.

Only one thing is for certain and that is,
"change is inevitable," and in this case, I think
even  in the words of Joni Mitchell, "they pave
paradise, and put up a parking lot," is an
acceptable and worthy alteration of
Milwaukee's  landscape.
The architectural elements in our man-made
environment are an inevitable part of the world in
which we live.  Yet many times we take our
surroundings for granted.  So often we set about our
normal routine, driving from home to work, plugged in
and online, never really noticing the environment
around us.  My images capture the mundane details
that are often overlooked as we go about our daily
lives.   I offer a different viewpoint; one the sheds light
on the truly spectacular structures that exist around
every corner

“In the 80s and 90s my photography
had been an effort to frankly and
directly capture the essence of
laborers in their work and the hard
beauties of their workplace. So far
this decade has been a challenge
for me to apply that very same
frankness to document the
structures, which laborers build
and/or tear down and the ever-
changing landscape of the building
sites.”
