Gallery Night & Day Preview
October 20-21, 2006
A chill is in the air, the leaves are off the trees, and it’s time for the fall
edition of Gallery Night once again.
Here is a small selection of some promising exhibitions:
Peltz Gallery
1119 E. Knapp Street
Past/Present, Warrington Colescott & Francis Meyers: Prints,
Paintings, Videos
This exhibition will include a variety of new and old works. A breakfast
reception on Saturday will begin at 11:30 and an informal talk with
Colescott and Meyers will follow at 1:30.
Dean Jensen Gallery
759 N. Water St.
Picture You in a Manet: Works by Wafaa Bilal
High technology makes for daring art in Bilal’s representation of
Manet’s classic Bar at the Folies-Bergere (1882). The viewer becomes
part of the work as the barmaid is animated by the presence of gallery
goers. According to gallery owner Dean Jensen, “Maybe most
surprising of all, the viewers will see themselves reflected in the
back-bar mirror about which art historians have written endlessly. The
piece also has an audio component -- clinking glasses, crowd noises,
etc.”
Also on view will be large scale photographs, and as Jensen notes,
“The highly autobiographical, but still private, photographs refer to
Bilal's life in Iraq as well as his life since the mid-1990s in the US.”
DeLind Gallery of Fine Art
400 E. Mason Street
Some Trees
Wisconsin artist Terry Firkins has
created a series of works painted
en plein-air which were inspired
by the poem “Some Trees” by
John Ashbery. Firkins “listened
in paint” during the three-year
course of this series, working
with palette knives on site to
develop these landscape
images.
Elaine Erickson Gallery
Artists & the Model: A Quarter Century with Pegi Taylor
Thirteen local and internationally known artists will show works based
on the art modeling of Pegi Taylor, an active member of the Milwaukee
art scene for over twenty-five years.
VP Gallery
320 E. Buffalo Street
On display will be photographs by Ellen Pizer, Carl Corey, James
Schnepf and others, plus images from Life Magazine and a preview of
the upcoming Steve McCurry exhibition.
Walker’s Point Center for the Arts
911 W. National Avenue
Emerging Artists and Fashion
Mary DiBiasio, Dorota Biczel Nelson, and Keith Nelson of
7th Floor Studio in Bay View will be on view, and Friday
night will include a variety of spoken word, dance, music,
and other performances featuring Nerve House, a
Milwaukee culture and activism publication.
The Kunzelmann Esser Loft Building
710 W. Historic Mitchell Street
Dreams and Nightmares
About thirty artists and studios will show works based on “Dreams and
Nightmares,” an exhibition that will run throughout the first three floors
of the building. Contemporary media such as film and video are of
special focus, and on the agenda for Friday evening are refreshments
and an impromptu breakdance show.
