Here is the dilemma: The Mary L. Nohl Fund Fellowships for Individual Artists have been awarded only to men in the past two years. We could look at one year as a fluke, but two years is inexcusable.
The fund is administered by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts in collaboration with Visual Arts Milwaukee! Polly Morris, the public relations person for the Peck School of Arts, was not able to compile statistics quickly enough for this week’s postings to offer any kind of examination of the numbers of women who actually submitted proposals or an explanation of the jurying process.
We hope to have this information by next week. However, we want to hear what you think.
Some questions to consider:
• Should UWM administer this funding? Or is there a more “neutral” organization to take on this duty. Have there been an inordinate amount of UWM faculty and alumni receiving the funds?
• Have an equal number of women artists applied for the funds or is our art community somehow proportionately skewed?
• What is the process for selecting the judges?
• While the jurying process begins “blind,” the selection of the finalists does incorporate studio visits and the perusal of resumes. Is this the best process for selection or are there alternatives?
Too much money is at stake here to not examine this process as a community. Let us know what you think.
